What 2-letter A words should every Scrabble player know?

The ones that actually come up are "aa" (a type of volcanic rock), "ab", "ad", "ah", "am", "an", "as", "at", "aw", "ax", and "ay". "Ax" is the pick of the bunch since X is worth 8 points. Most players forget "aa" exists but it is perfectly valid and a nice surprise when the board is crowded.

Why do so many English words start with A?

Latin and Greek prefixes do most of the work. "Ad-", "anti-", "auto-", "ante-", and "ab-" together account for a massive chunk of A words. Add in everyday words like "arm", "ask", "act", and "air" and you have one of the largest starting letter groups in the dictionary.

What 5-letter A words work well as Wordle guesses?

"Arise" is one of the better ones because it hits three vowels and two common consonants in one shot. "Audio" is another popular pick for the same reason. The goal early on is to cover as many common letters as possible, and a well-chosen A word does that cleanly.
